Anyone that knows me, knows how much I love north western Maryland and a place called Deep Creek Lake. My family and I have been vacationing there for over 35 years. When I was a child, our families would come together and rent a large house or cabin. I remember many hikes in the woods, camp fires, go-carts and water skiing. In the later years I came to appreciate the total relaxation that comes with being one with nature.
How fortunate I was that I was able to share this with my granddaughter Marie recently. As we sat in rocking chairs on the large tree top deck, we marveled at the whispering winds and talkative trees. We spoke about trees that you could see through and tiny fairies floating all around the tree tops. We listened; we listened to each other, we listened to our hearts, we listened to the Lord and gave thanks.
From the magnificent music of rustling leaves and tiny twigs breaking beneath the weight of small fallen branches, my granddaughter and I planned and plotted. We made a deal that we would get up during the wee hours of the morning to check for snow and maybe share a cup of cocoa before sliding quietly back under the our warm quilts until morning. While we watched for deer and whispered sweet secrets to each other, we experienced a genuinely beautiful moment in time that will never be forgotten. Believe what you will but for me Deep Creek Lake, MD is what a little bit of heaven must be like. Even the stars seemed so close that you imagined almost touching them.
