I just recently acquired a collection of vintage 1910s-1920s unused miniature tobacco company postcards! The company is Henry Clay and Bock & Co. Ltd. Habana. These were collected by a women that lived in Habana at the end of the 1910s and first half of the 1920s. Her husband was a very heavy smoker. The company Henry Clay and Bock & Co. Ltd. Habana, produced these miniature postcards measuring 2.25”x 1.5” which consisted of photographs mostly in black-white-shades of gray, with occasional touches of color. The fashions are mainly late Victorian and early Edwardian, even the children ones. Some of them are risky, at least were risky at the time. They are super interesting. They do have fold lines due to the way they were inserted in the tobacco packages. These Susini Poem Postcards were made for the Susini Albums.
Way before the Cuban Revolution, this company’s headquarters were located in Habana and the owners were, in fact, Cuban. As a promotional measure, the cigars came with these mini postcards inserted right under the cellophane cover, but outside the box. According to a friend, you could not see the front, but only the back of the postcard, until you opened the package. There were several series of these cards: youth and children, vaudeville, famous actresses, Victorian elegance, Habana scenes, pets, etc. All the cards were numbered on the bottom right corner, as you can see in the close-ups. Once you completed a series, you could go to a certain place in Habana and pick up an album, for which you had to pay 200 escudos; this was advertised occasionally on the back of some of the cards, so not everyone knew about the offer. Now and again, the cards had poems printed on their backside instead of the usual postcard legend; these poems were adaptations of Spanish language real poems, which were changed to export a specific type of cigar produced by Clay and Bock and which was called Susini Cigar; the albums were therefore known as Susini Albums.
